Bedford City

  • Avenel, the stately mansion and its landscape, has for over one hundred and fifty years been a centerpiece in the social, cultural, and political life of Bedford. Built circa 1838 by William M. Burwell and his wife, Frances Steptoe Burwell, Avenel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. The building is being renovated as an attractive, convenient, spacious place for business meetings or other events.

  • The 1834 Cottage - Oldest building in downtown Bedford on its original site. Was initially yard cottage for adjoining large dwelling. Restored in 1987, it is currently used as a business office and is not open to the public.

  • Bedford Historic Meeting House - Listed on National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register, building erected in 1838 as first meeting house for Methodists in Town of Liberty. Open on special occasions and by appointment. Call (540) 586-8188.
