Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation - 1790

Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation - 1790 is a National Register landmark situated just off the Route 5 Virginia Scenic Byway. The original log portion of Piney Grove, a rare survival of eighteenth-century Virginia log architecture, was constructed by plantation owner Furneau Southall. Southall served on the Charles City County Committee of Safety with Benjamin Harrison, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and John Tyler, father of President Tyler, and also held a captainship in the militia under Benjamin Harrison. Following the Revolutionary War Furneau Southall administered the first Federal Census in 1790. Other family members included James Barrett Southall, owner of Williamsburg's Raleigh Tavern, and Turner Southall, who served on the committee to build Thomas Jefferson's Capitol.

Today the gardens and grounds Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation are open to the public for self-guided tours. Please call for a calendar of regularly scheduled special event tours. Group tours are by advance reservation and historic bed and breakfast lodging is available on the property in the Ladysmith House.

Piney Grove at Southall's Plantation - 1790 is an official site of Virginia's Civil War Trails, the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail and the Time Travelers Program. Piney Grove historic markers are located in front property and along the Virginia Route 5 Scenic Byway. The site is also listed in the AAA Tourbook and Virginia is for Lovers Guide, and on the official Virginia Highway Map.
