Newport New, Virginia

  • Built 1769, Endview Plantation was used by General Thomas Nelson's Virginia Militia as a resting place on September 28, 1781 en route to Yorktown. It was the prewar home of Captain Humphrey Harwood Curtis, Captain of the Warwick Beaureguards, a company of the 32nd Virginia Infantry Regiment. During the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, the house at Endview was used as a field hospital by both Confederate and Union troops. Around May 5, 1862, the house was used by Union General George B. McClellan as his headquarters during the Battle of Williamsburg. The house is restored to it's 1862 appearance and is open for tours.

  • Begun in 1848 by Richard Decauter Lee, one of the wealthiest Warwick County landowners, Lee Hall is among the last surviving ante-bellum homes on the Virginia Peninsula. The mansion was used as a command center by Confederate Generals John Bankhead Magruder and Joseph E. Johnston during April and May of 1862. Now a historic house museum, Lee Hall offers visitors a step back into the past in its authentically furnished period rooms. An exhibit gallery features artifacts from the Peninsula Campaign, including a tablecloth from the USS Monitor, as well as items recovered from the nearby site of the Battle of Dam #1.
